Project Start Date: 2021-09-01

Project End Date: 2022-02-27

“Under the Shadow of Color,” the latest project by the Nomad Art Group, is a riveting performance drama that delves into the complexities of artistic creation and generational shifts. Set against the backdrop of the art world, the play explores the inner turmoil and creative struggles of Mark Rothko, a renowned painter. As Rothko embarks on the daunting task of creating a masterpiece for an extraordinary setting, he is confronted not only by the expectations of his art but also by the rising influence of a new generation of artists. This tension is accentuated by the watchful presence of his young assistant, who represents both support and a challenge to his artistic authority.

Directed by Hamed Janali, “Under the Shadow of Color” is a compelling narrative that masterfully blends drama and introspection. Janali, also taking a lead role as an actor alongside Mohammad Janfada, brings depth and nuance to the production. The dynamic between the characters, portrayed by Janali and Janfada, adds layers of complexity to the story, making it a captivating watch. Assistant Directors Sahar Mokhtari and Parisa Mansouri contribute to the seamless execution of the play, ensuring that every scene resonates with the audience.

The visual and aesthetic elements of the play were meticulously crafted to complement the narrative. Light Designer Salar Hosseini created an ambiance that reflects the emotional undertones of the play, while Makeup Artist Afarin Azizeddin enhanced the characters’ expressions through skillful makeup artistry. The set, designed by Hamed Janali and Ali Zohdi, provided a tangible representation of Rothko’s world, immersing the audience in the artist’s studio. Photographers Sasha Shahrabi and Arman Azadi captured the essence of the performances, and Graphic Designer Sara Alizadeh’s work on the promotional materials effectively communicated the play’s theme and mood.

“Under the Shadow of Color” was not just a theatrical presentation; it was an experience that bridged cultural gaps. Performed in Farsi with English surtitles, the play reached a diverse audience, making it accessible to both Farsi-speaking viewers and those unfamiliar with the language. This approach broadened the play’s appeal and emphasized Nomad Art Group’s commitment to cultural inclusivity.

Staged from the 25th to the 27th of February 2022, the production of “Under the Shadow of Color” was a six-month journey of creative synthesis. This period was marked by intense preparation, rehearsals, and artistic collaboration, culminating in a performance that left a lasting impact on its audience. The play’s success is a testament to the dedication and talent of everyone involved, proving once again that the Nomad Art Group is a formidable force in the world of theater.
